Even though the trip to Santa Teresa/ Malpais is quite long, it truly is worth the time.
Below are some of the best ways to get to this unique place. Once you’re in Santa Teresa, see

Option 1
The fastest way to get to Santa Teresa from San Jose Airport is to take a local flight. There are few airlines flying to Tambor: Sansa Regional, Aerobell, and Green Airways. The flight takes about 30 minutes from San Jose. Once you land in Tambor, you can take a taxi or organize a private transfer with us. It takes around 40 mins to drive from Tambor to Santa Teresa.
Option 2
We can book a shuttle for you or a private transfer from San Jose. The driver will pick you up
from the airport or any hotel in San Jose and drop you off at our place. The difference between private and shared transfer is that in a shuttle you have to leave the car before the ferry and change it for another car when you arrive in Paquera. Also the shared transfer is much cheaper and runs at specific hours.
Option 3
You can rent a car in San Jose from one of the car rental companies like Alamo, Budget Car, National or Enterprise and choose Santa Teresa/ Malpais as a return place. Make sure to book a car in advance as in a high season cars are sold out often. Drive from San Jose to Puntarenas where you can get a ferry to Paquera (you can check the hours or buy tickets here: https://www.quickpaycr.com/ ). Make sure to get there earlier because if you are late, there might not be enough tickets for your car. The ferry takes around 1.5 hours. When you are in Paquera drive to Santa Teresa direction and after 1.5 hours you will be here!?
Option 4
A direct bus, run by Transportes Cobano ( https://m.facebook.com/TransCobano/ ), departs twice a day from Downtown San Jose (Terminal 7–10) and brings you to Malpais/Santa Teresa. The bus departs from downtown San Jose at 6:00am and 2:00pm.
Once you arrived
From the crossroads in Santa Teresa (next to Alamo car rental and Denga surf shop) turn left in Malpais direction and go straight for another 500m. After Malpais surf camp you will see the sign „Little Escape” on your left side, turn after the sign and go through the gate. Cross the liittle river through the bridge next to the pool and here you are ?
